As grass carp indiscriminately eat both exotic and native vegetation, they can completely eliminate or reduce cover, food, and shelter for fish and wildlife species such as waterfowl, amphibians, salmon, steelhead, and trout. Bull trout caught in any stream must be released back into the stream. Only triploid grass carp from an approved supplier are allowed, and the permit application must be approved by both ODFW district and regional biologists. Ponds stocked with fish capable of reproduction (any warmwater species or diploid trout) or fish less than 6 inches in length (any species) need inch double screen and any fish over 6" need 1/2 inch screens. Anglers are reminded that bull trout and chinook salmon may be encountered in the Grande Ronde River and must be released unharmed. This prevents the fish from reproducing. Adults spawn in the fall, typically at age 2 to 3, on gravelly shoals of lakes and, like most Pacific salmon, die soon after spawning. In Oregon, grass carp are a controlled species and require a grass carp stocking permit. The reservoir drained significantly last year, and there may not be many fish that survived through the fall and winter.
